Swedish School of Boston

Music

Several times each year, the Swedish School performs at different occasions with singing and music. At Christmas there’s obviously a “Lucia” celebration and Christmas singing. During Easter we sing for the elderly at Scandinavian Living Center and at Midsummer and the end of the year it is obvious that singing is essential with “Den Blomstertid nu Kommer” as the primary song! Our music teacher Kia gathers the students, in separate groups and sometimes all together, and everyone learns different Swedish songs. The kids think it is fun to get a break from the regular school work once in a while and sing!

Kia Kia is the music teacher for the Swedish School in Boston. Kia, originally from “Dalarna” in Sweden, has over 20 years of experience as a chorus leader in both Sweden and USA. In Uppsala Music school she was in charge of the whole chorus organization with several choruses that performed in concerts, church services, and at special occasions. They set up musicals, child theatre and went on different tours all around Europe. Her girl-chorus “De Visa”, which consisted of girls ages 13-19 received international recognition at several chorus contests and festivals. Kia has also worked with adult choruses, both mixed choruses and only women. In Boston, she leads the Stardust Show Chorus (www.stardustshowchorus.org), a jazz chorus that originated six years ago, which has already participated in several concerts and events in Boston. Kia is married to Per and has children Anna Maria, 8 years old, a student in Nybyggarna, and Mattias, 4 years old. The Parents in Swedish School say that Kia inspires the kids to sing Swedish songs at home and they see the music education as a step in providing their kids with some of the rich Scandinavian culture.

“Say it with songs!”
